Why urban 5G needs a new mid-layer?
Traffic growth and 5G service expectations are rising fastest in cities. Traditional macro densification is often slowed by site acquisition, space limits and permitting.
What is a street micro cell?
A street micro cell is a medium-power radio access point (roughly 10W up to 4x40W per sector) typically installed in 10-20m smart poles, offering wider coverage than small cells while complementing macro sites.
Energy efficiency and performance
Street micro cells improve throughput with lower UE and site transmit power thanks to shorter distances. The paper explains how micro-sleep, deep sleep and cross-layer shutdown can cut energy use while macro layers maintain coverage.
EMF compliance: plan it early
Medium-power street sites must comply with country-specific EMF rules (e.g., EIRP limits and clearance distances). Not every streetlight location is feasible, so careful site selection and planning are essential.
Smart pole and urban 5G support
Urban 5G densification strategy
Design the right mix of macro, street micro and small cells for your city hotspots. We support traffic demand analysis, site candidate selection, radio planning assumptions (height, sectors, spectrum layers) and rollout prioritisation – aligned with city requirements and permitting timelines.
Smart pole business case
Build a robust business case for smart poles: CAPEX/OPEX modelling, neutral host and infrastructure-sharing options, and monetisation of add-on services (advertising, Wi-Fi, sensors, CCTV, EV charging). We help define stakeholder roles and cost-sharing models with municipalities, utilities and tower companies.
Backhaul roadmap (fiber to IAB)
Choose the best backhaul approach for each location and time horizon. We assess fiber availability, microwave/mmWave feasibility (LOS, aesthetics), 60GHz mesh options and the readiness of 3GPP Integrated Access Backhaul (IAB). The result is a deployable roadmap that balances performance, cost and speed-to-market.
EMF compliance & permitting
Turn EMF constraints into a site selection advantage. We support EIRP and clearance-distance calculations, documentation for regulators and municipalities, and practical guidance on antenna height, sectorisation and power settings to keep deployments compliant without compromising coverage targets.
Energy efficiency & RAN optimisation
Improve energy efficiency without sacrificing customer experience. We help evaluate and activate RAN energy-saving features (micro-sleep, deep sleep, carrier shutdown), define KPIs such as bits/Joule, and optimise multi-layer coverage so that low-traffic periods can be served efficiently.
Smart city integration partners
Extend the value of connectivity with smart city services. We support the integration of sensors, public Wi-Fi, information displays, CCTV and future use cases (e.g., drone charging). We help align technical design with operations, data governance and partner ecosystems.

Urban 5G densification: what the data shows.
Why street micro cells
Street micro cells sit between macro and small cells: higher antennas and power than small cells, faster to deploy than new macro sites, and able to host smart city services – if backhaul and EMF constraints are solved.
