IT Strategy for the Dresden Municipal Drainage System

Stadtentwässerung Dresden GmbH (SEDD) is a joint venture between the Saxon state capital of Dresden and Gelsenwasser AG. SEDD bears municipal responsibility for the discharge and treatment of wastewater in Dresden and neighbouring municipalities. In addition to customer management, its most important tasks include the construction and expansion of wastewater treatment plants, including their operation, as well as the maintenance and expansion of the existing sewer network, which is over 1,800 kilometres long.

Challenges of the IT-Strategy

Definition of a new IT strategy and implementation support in three phases:

  • As-is analysis: analysis of the status quo, identification of future requirements, development of target picture and derivation of action areas for optimizing IT.
  • Measure detailing: Design of change measures for the IT operating model, coordination of a change roadmap in the form of IT projects.
  • Implementation support: Detailed design of the new IT control functions and IT processes as well as operational support for the implementation of the new IT operating model.

Solutions for the Dresden Municipal Drainage System

  • Development of an overarching strategic IT target picture (office IT, process IT, building IT, TC).
  • Implementation planning for the implementation of the IT strategy over several years.
  • Establishment of an architecture function (EAM) and development of the enterprise architecture.
  • Fixing of the strategic IT roadmap and implementation of IT project portfolio management.
  • Implementation of IT governance for effective implementation of the long-term IT roadmap.

Benefits of the IT-Strategy for the Municipal Drainage System

  • Realignment of IT with regard to future business requirements (digitization).
  • Adoption of proven methods and tools as well as introduction of new impulses through a broad experience base from comparable projects for the development of an IT strategy.
