What is your academic background?
I studied International Management in my bachelor's and pursued a master's in Business Administration with an IT focus. However, I also wanted to gain practical experience during my studies and therefore completed various internships - which included working for a large automotive manufacturer and a food producer. I wrote my final thesis in cooperation with the companies.
Why did you choose Detecon as an employer?
During my studies, I gained experience in both a large corporation with rigid processes and a startup lacking structure. I desired a middle ground and an environment where I could learn a lot and have a say in decision-making. I always envisioned entering the consulting industry for its project-based work, offering constant exposure to new topics and variety. Detecon first came to my attention through a friend from my studies who spoke highly of the company culture and work in projects.
What challenges did you face at the start of your career?
My biggest challenge at the start was the COVID-19 pandemic. Daily remote work made it difficult for me to get to know my new colleagues. Initiating a 'Coffee Call' via Teams for introductions felt more challenging compared to approaching someone in person, be it in the office, corridor, or by the coffee machine.
What is your focus area at Detecon, and how did you find it?
I work in the "Business Process Management & Applications" tribe, dealing with various processes, such as production processes, optimizing and streamlining them for efficiency. At Detecon, you can choose your focus area and develop further in it. I had already supported projects in process management during my internships, making it clear that I wanted to continue in this field because I really enjoyed it and realized that I had good career opportunities.
What guidance have you received at Detecon?
Initially, my two leaders were particularly supportive. They had a keen sense of when I needed more assistance and when I could work independently. We had regular touchpoints to discuss project work, professional development, and personal matters. Additionally, I had a buddy for the first six months for any questions, and Detecon offers a mentoring program.
What are the perks of being employed at Detecon?
Regarding my workplace, I enjoy high flexibility. I can work from home as well as in the office from anywhere in Germany. The "Workation" further expands professional and private opportunities, allowing employees to work from various countries for several weeks a year. Last year, I spent time working in Bangkok after a vacation in Thailand, meeting colleagues from our Bangkok office.
What tools and methods do you use in your daily projects?
It depends on the project. Initially, classic tools like PowerPoint and Excel were rather universal. Now, in agile projects, I use Jira and Confluence. Jira efficiently manages tasks and provides transparency in agile processes, while Confluence serves as a collaboration platform for sharing information and documenting knowledge. For process-related matters, I use SAP Signavio for process modeling and visualization and Celonis for analyzing and optimizing business processes. These tools offer deep insights into processes and enable targeted process optimization. Personally, I like to structure myself using handwritten to-do lists for a calming effect on my day, week, and overall project routine.
What advice do you have for graduates starting their careers?
"The mountain always appears larger when you're right in front of it." It may sound cliché, but it's true. At the beginning of your career, you'll encounter many new challenges and may feel overwhelmed. My advice is to take things step by step, prioritize tasks, and organize yourself well. But it is also very valuable to exchange ideas with colleagues at different career levels. Ultimately, we all face the same challenges.
